Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
News broadcasting plays a crucial role in informing the public about security issues, fostering awareness, and encouraging proactive measures. In Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, security challenges such as communal clashes, banditry, and kidnappings have heightened the need for accurate and timely information. News programs on radio and television provide updates on security developments, government policies, and safety tips, shaping public understanding and responses to threats. Studies reveal that well-structured news broadcasts can enhance public awareness and foster collaboration between citizens and security agencies (Abubakar & Musa, 2023; Suleiman, 2024). This study examines the influence of news broadcasting on public awareness of security issues in Jalingo, highlighting its impact and challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of news broadcasting in Jalingo LGA, public awareness of security issues remains inconsistent. Factors such as misinformation, limited access to credible sources, and inadequate coverage of local concerns may undermine the effectiveness of news broadcasts. Additionally, there is limited empirical evidence on how news broadcasting influences public understanding and behavior regarding security issues in this region. This study addresses these gaps by exploring the role of news broadcasting in enhancing public awareness of security issues in Jalingo LGA.
